Hat Trick of New Releases Today

I’ve been busy updating various mapsets during the past month and am ready to release new versions of three of them: Northwest Trails, Northwest Snow Trails, and Northwest Topos!

I’ll start with Northwest Topos, since the most significant changes have happened there.  Coverage for Washington is now complete with the addition of many new tiles since version 0.04.  Perhaps more significant is the fact that I’ve abandoned the idea of using 40′ contour intervals for all tiles.  As I worked on more and more tiles (especially those covering the Columbia Plateau), it became clear that 40′ was simply too great an interval for many areas.  I am now in the process of converting all tiles to follow the intervals seen on the USGS 7.5-minute topo maps of the same areas.  Thus, for relatively flat areas you will see 10′ contours, while for in-between areas (like the Puget Sound lowlands and foothills), you will see 20′ intervals.  Only the most mountainous areas will use 40′ intervals.  The conversion process will take some time, so for now you will see a mish-mash of converted and unconverted tiles.

Here’s a full list of the changes in this version of Northwest Topos:

Two New Versions of Beta Mapsets Posted

I’ve posted new versions of a couple of mapsets today:

Northwest Topos

It’s been a while since I’ve updated this mapset, although I’ve not lacked a desire to do so.  If all goes well I will have Washington State complete (and the mapset out of “beta” status) within a month.  This update adds a few new tiles and allows you to select normal or high visibility trail types at install similar to Northwest Trails.

Northwest Snow Trails

This is a new mapset that contains cross-country ski trails, snowshoe trails and snowmobile trails for the Northwest.  For those of you remember when Northwest Trails included snow trails, you’ll recognize that this mapset contains all of those trails that were peeled out of that mapset a year ago.  It also includes a number of new additions.  I consider this very much a “beta” in that the coverage is definitely lacking (note, for example, that popular destinations such as West Yellowstone, Seeley Lake, et al. are void of data).  Hopefully it won’t take long before we get these areas filled in.  Send in your data!

Enjoy the new mapsets, and please give me your feedback!

Northwest Trails v1.53 Now Available – Happy New Year and Welcome Alberta!

Happy New Year!  I hope that everyone is enjoying a warm and comfortable wind-down to the holiday season.  I know that I am definitely looking forward to this next year and the prospect of bringing continued improvements to Switchbacks.com and the Northwest Trails Project.

We’re kicking off 2010 with a big addition – Alberta!  I had received a few requests from people over recent months to add the province, and with it sharing trails in the Rockies with neighboring British Columbia – already included in NW Trails – it made sense to add it in.  Many thanks go out to John at the Southern Alberta Trail Mapping Project for graciously offering  his data from that project to Northwest Trails.  Seeding the database with John’s content is a huge start, although there is still a lot of work to be done.  So, if you have any data for trails in Alberta, I welcome you to send it in!

Below is the complete list of additions in this version of Northwest Trails.  Enjoy!

Site Upgrade Almost Complete, and New Content

The conversion of the Switchbacks.com site to ASP.net is nearly complete (I’m just tidying up a few odds and ends) and in the overhaul I’ve added a couple of new pages:

Often I’m asked about other mapping projects around the country or world similar to the Northwest Trails Project, so I thought I’d start cataloging these other sites on a links page.  I figured it could also be a useful spot for directing folks to other places for downloading custom mapsets, getting information on developing their own mapsets, etc.  Right now the list of links is fairly “bare-bones” but will get fleshed out over time.  If you have a category or link you would like to see added, please send it my way!

This page is meant to be a repository for downloads and other goodies related to promotion of the site in general and the Northwest Trails Project specifically.  As of now I have a handful of graphical badges (including some specific to geocaching!) that can be used wherever you can embed HTML along with a PDF file of business cards.  The badges link back to the site and help to get the word out about the site and its purpose, while the business cards contain a brief synopsis of the Northwest Trails Project.  These can be printed and cut for handing out to potentially interested individuals encountered on the trails.

There have been numerous other improvements and upgrades to the site as well, including the addition of the Washington Hunting Units mapset and a move to the use of master pages in the site design (think of them as “templates” that allow for a more consistent and more easily-maintained look and feel to the site).  One page that has been significantly overhauled is the Data Upload page, which now strips problematic characters from file names (an issue that was causing some uploads to fail in the past), makes it easier to declare which user types are and are not allowed on the trails in a given submission, and does a better job of presenting feedback to the user on the success or failure of a given upload.

Please let me know what you think of the changes, and where you’d like to see things go from here!

And We’re Back!

You may have noticed that this blog and the Switchbacks.com forums have been down for the last couple of days.  I learned (the hard way) that the “Publish Web Site” feature of Visual Studio acts like a sync and removes folders and files on the site that are not present on the local computer.  Since the forums and blog are all stored on the remote server, this meant that they were wiped out by my actions.

Luckily, I was able to work with my web hosting company to get the deleted data restored.  Whew!

All in all, no real damage done.  Merry Christmas, everyone!

Forums Database Crash This Morning

This morning I was making an update to the Switchbacks.com forum software and tweaking some settings, and the next thing you know – BAM!  No database.  Attempts to recover failed, and so I was left to restore an old backup – which unfortunately was 4 months old. :(   So, in short, the forums are back up but all accounts, changes and posts made since August have gone by the wayside.  I’ve finished returning the cosmetic changes I recently made, but lots of substance is gone.  My apologies, everyone.  Now I know to believe the “backup before updating” warning on the software!

New Logo Unveiled!

For those of you who have gotten sick looking at my Geocaching.com avatar plastered all over the site, you can now rejoice – I’ve finished the design and implementation of a true Switchbacks.com logo:

Switchbacks.com Logo

I’m also using this change as a kick-off point for a redesign of the site.  There is still much to do, including a conversion of all pages to ASP.net, but it’s a start! :)   Let me know what you think of the new look (and any issues you might encounter)!

A fair amount of new and updated data is present in this release, as despite the turn in weather in the Northwest the submissions continue to come in.  I have also continued scouring through Garmin Connect for GPX files for areas that could use improvement.

For those of you who haven’t seen it yet, I’ve updated the data submission page to allow for indications of the trail and user types in the data.  Please note that an email address is now required to submit (I’ve had enough submissions from unknown sources for which I’ve had questions that I felt the need to add it).

Below is the full list of changes in this release.  Enjoy!
